Using Irfanview
Cropping and resizing your photos should be done BEFORE uploading them to your host. You will have much more control of the final product this way. Irfanview is very easy to use and works well for a freeware program.
Launch (open) Irfanview.
On the menu bar: File --› Open
Browse your computer and open the photo you want to resize.
Your photo may fill your screen. Minimize the window and use the magnifying glass with the minus sign until you can see the entire photo easily.
You first will want to crop your photo, removing unwanted space around the subject. Left click/hold and drag a box anywhere on the photo. Release your mouse.
Hover your mouse pointer over one of the lines and it will turn into an arrow. You can then click and drag each side to where you want. If you need the photo a specific size, watch the numders at the top of the screen, this will show you what size the outline it.
You should only have the area you want to show inside the box.
On the menu bar: Edit --› Crop Selection
our photo may fill your screen again. Mimize your screen and use the magnifying class until you can see the entire photo easily.
On the menu bar: Image --› Resize/Resample
Select Set New Size and enter the width the you want your image to be. It is recommended that you keep the width under 550 pixels. You do not need to set the height. It is automatically calculated, depending on the width that you entered. You also want to make sure that Preserve Aspect Ratio is checked. On the right side of the menu, the only option that should be checked is Resample (better quality).
Your photo is now cropped and resized. You are ready to save your file to your computer.
On the menu bar: File --› Save As
At the top of the menu, check the folder you will saving your NEW photo into. Change if necessary. Make sure you rename your photo (incase you make a mistake). Next select your file type. As a general rule, you want to save your photos as JPGs.
On the right menu, you will want only the following selected: Keep Original EXIF Data, Keep Original IPTC Data, Keep Original JPG-Comment. Finally, make sure the quality is set at about 75-80. If you are cropping/resizing gallery photos for eBay, do not use any compression, set it at 100. The gallery photo gets compressed by eBay.
